Summary
The evil eye and jinxes have some basis in reality: when we look at someone, we direct our energies and attention toward them, and one person can affect another in any relationship. Bad moods, anger, envy, and bad spiritual company affect whoever is on the receiving end. This effect does not come from a specific energy but from the environment: in different contexts, the same energies are given different names. Learning more about energy helps us deal calmly with these influences.

Ever since I was little, I have always heard about hexes and the evil eye. Many times, I could not sleep, I would lie with my eyes wide open, and I only rested after someone blessed me. But what truth is there about hexes and the negative influence that people can transmit to one another through the gaze? In the old days, people spoke a great deal about hexes, known in Portuguese as quebranto (or quebrante). Mothers protected their children from people who might cast the evil eye, using little red ribbons on the children's feet as protection. When someone came to see the baby, they brought a euphoric energy that could affect the child, who is unprotected. This can also occur with adults: in any relationship, one person can affect another. In looking at someone, we direct our energies toward that person.
If I am in a bad mood, angry, in bad spiritual company, or envious, that affects the other person. Envy is the desire to have what the other person has or is. We need to understand that we have our spiritual companions and beliefs, and that perhaps we lack the competence to deal with these situations in an organized way. Learning more about energy helps us to deal with this calmly.
When you could not sleep, you really were being affected. That effect does not come from a specific energy, but from the environment we are in. In different environments, we undergo the same energies, only with different names. It is important to learn more so as not to pay that price. When we speak about influence through the eyes, we are referring to directing our energies and attention.
