Summary
Change is possible in a single lifetime, but it requires clear goals, knowledge to deal with problems, and the willpower to follow through on consistent decisions. Dependence learned from childhood onward and conditioning can keep a person trapped in addictions and repeating patterns. Breaking this cycle requires self-reflection and drawing nourishment from happy and enlightening things in a society drawn to conflict and intense emotions. Change comes from within. It takes patience to mature and improve the world, without expecting miraculous solutions.

Today's topic is: changing in one lifetime. Is it possible to change everything in one lifetime? Many people believe so, that we can reach heaven along our course. However, when we do not understand well, everything seems simple. Understanding deeply makes us realize that there are issues to resolve. When we understand a great deal, everything becomes simpler, because we already have answers for the challenges that arise.
If a person without resources faces a small problem, it can seem enormous. Someone with vast knowledge, on the other hand, can resolve great problems with few words. That is how life works. Is it possible to change in one lifetime? I believe so, but it is necessary to face that with all one's energy and strength. Coming out of the shadow of suffering, understanding oneself and the world around us, is not simple. We live in an incredible world, but we are the ones who destroy it, who deforest and create wars. A better path would be to eliminate borders between countries, but there is a lack of intelligence for us to become a single race—or rather, universal beings.
Changing in one lifetime requires clarity about what we want and where we want to get to. Understanding this is fundamental for evolution. Knowledge is essential in order to grow and to change life. We begin life dependent. The human being is the only animal that is born that way. Other animals are independent from birth. Our dependence continues throughout life, even after we are weaned and learn to feed ourselves. That need for care persists because we learned it from early on.
In adolescence, many people still cannot see themselves as independent. At 17 or 18 years old, few have clarity about their capacities and limits. Many times, the dependence turns into other addictions, such as drug use. This may be linked to the oral phase, a need for sensations in the mouth. In order to change in one lifetime, we need to make decisions that lead us to better paths than the ones we see around us, because most people face many difficulties.
It is important to stop and reflect on how to change your life, to be better and happier. Think about how to leave this life satisfied, without repeating patterns from past lives. Many times, we are so conditioned that we become like trained animals, following the easiest path. It is essential to review oneself and to make coherent decisions, such as quitting smoking. Deciding to quit smoking, for example, requires determination. A friend of mine decided to throw his pack of cigarettes into the river when we were at a train station near the Pinheiros River, stating that he would not smoke anymore. Days later, he confessed that he had an uncontrollable urge to smoke and questioned whether that was spiritual harassment. I explained that his own will should prevail. He returned to smoking. In order to change one's life, it is necessary to feed on happy and enlightening things; otherwise, we remain trapped in a repetitive cycle.
Change is not easy, but it is necessary in order to get out of repetition and sameness. Many people, even at 60 or 70 years old, still have not matured and continue to act like children. Aggressive behaviors are signs of immaturity. Patience is needed in order to grow and to improve the world. Society is attracted by conflicts and intense emotions, as shown on TV. Talking about love and happiness attracts a smaller audience, but it is essential for a better world. Emotional dependence is a recurring subject, and many people seek miraculous solutions without realizing that true change comes from within.
