Summary
To feel the energy rather than imagine it, apply pressure to your body from your feet to your head, noticing the pressure in each area. Repeat this practice to become aware of your physical body and make the path of energy and sensation clearer and more automatic. This path is more productive than the lateral one because it works all the chakras with each movement.

I have difficulty imagining the energy circulating from the feet to the head. Can I instead circulate the energy from one side to the other? When "imagining" is mentioned, it is important to point out that it is not a matter of imagining, but of feeling the energy. Trying to imagine can be harder than simply feeling. To make it easier, some techniques can be used, such as touching the spot. Suppose you are lying down: squeeze your feet, feel them, and keep squeezing up the body to the head. Someone else can help. While doing that, try to feel the spot where the pressure is occurring.
This is not resolved right away; it is necessary to repeat it several times in order to become aware of the physical body. In this way, the path of energy and sensation becomes clearer and more automatic. The issue is efficiency: I believe it is more productive to move the energy from the feet to the head, because that way you work with all the chakras in each movement. Therefore, use the technique of touching the spot and trying to feel—it is a good practice.
