Each person defines what exists in their own way. This is how I see the etheric double, based on study, research, literature, associations, questions, and observations through clairvoyance in the astral body. Since this is not available for objective verification or application of scientific methodology, we follow the possible path: observation.

According to what I have studied, the etheric double is an energetic organization, the "glue" between the physical and astral bodies. It is a body but does not carry consciousness. Its chakras allow self-maintenance and energy flow between vehicles, from physical to astral and vice versa.

Starting from the mental body, the first vehicle studied that manifests consciousness, there is the golden double, which does not manifest consciousness and glues the mental to the astral body. It plays the same role as the etheric double between astral and physical. All flow occurs through chakras. Those of the etheric double are the most visible and popular; others require very high clairvoyance or very lucid astral projection.

The etheric double arises from energy donated by the mother during pregnancy, initially forming the fetus and accompanying the person. It may surround the physical body at a larger or smaller size. Larger is associated with vitalization; smaller with depression or devitalization. Depressed people would normally have it at the level of the physical body, depending on whether depression is mild, moderate, severe, or very severe.

The chakras capture environmental energy and pulse constantly. Their discharges appear at joints—shoulders, fingers, and knees—and may circulate around the body. Configurations vary with history and emotional context. During fear, defensive discharges can be intense and produce butterflies in the stomach and weak legs.

These discharges may occur at specific moments or continuously, but each output does not remain constant: it works in pulses and appears linear. It may leave the shoulders, throat, ears, and eyes. The chakra in greater activity increases visible exteriorization or reception. The double works all the time and may be fed, overloaded, or devitalized depending on the environment. Needy environments such as brothels and psychiatric hospitals take energy and reduce its size.

Nature offers subtler energy: trees, rivers, and bonfires would help recharge it, while the chakras receive and process what these environments exteriorize. Emotional condition can make the double stronger and more defined or weaker, fainter, and disorganized.

The visible density of the double is greater in the lower body, especially the genital area, soles of the feet, and knees. It is present throughout the vehicle, glues everything together, and allows astral travel through indefinite space because it is pure, readjustable energy. When going to another country or planet, the cord remains connected.

Up to about four meters, the cord would have considerable thickness. It then thins through natural readjustment to the diameter sufficient for flow between vehicles, compared to a strand of hair over great distances. Thus it could reach anywhere in the universe while maintaining the connection and indicating the physical body's location.

The etheric double is elastic energy of various densities: denser where it adheres to the physical and less dense near the astral. It is malleable, adapts, and recovers. When part of the body is injured, it loses energy and decreases at that point, but global circulation soon restores its prior state. It can also be exteriorized, moved, and produce physical effects.
